The scoring system is French in origin. Points make up a game, games make up a set, and sets make up a match. Friendly matches are usually based on best out of three sets. However, in tournaments, women's tennis consists of the best of three sets and men's the best of five sets.
To avoid confusion, the person who is serving, is always called first e.g.: 0 - 15. The player with 0 points is said to have ΓÇ£loveΓÇ¥.
The first point is 15, the next, 30, and the third, 40. The next point is game. If the score is 40-30 the next point by the server (who has 40) will win him the game.
When both players have three points each to tie a game at 40-40, the score is ΓÇ£deuceΓÇ¥. The next point scored is called ΓÇ£advantageΓÇ¥ for the winning player; should that player score the next point, he wins the game. However, if the other player wins the point, the score goes back to ΓÇ£deuceΓÇ¥ until one player wins by two points. The first person to win six games with a margin of at least two games, is the winner of the set. If both players win six games each, a ΓÇ£tie-breakΓÇ¥ game may be played to decide the winner.
In a match, the players change sides at the end of every odd-numbered game, i.e. first, third, fifth, and so on.
